Popular culture.

From decorating your college dorm to displaying your WiFi password, embroidery is a perfect medium to express your favourite fandoms, movies, and other popular culture followings. This gallery of select examples demonstrates the possibilities that embroidery can offer for decoration and adornment within the realm of popular culture.

Ghibli-it all up.

This example of embroidered wall art was a gift to a friend who is an enthusiastic Ghibli-officiando. This work combines traditional satin stitching, single-thread thin linework, and mixed-medium stabilising to create a simple but elegant way to decorate your dorm room with your favourite fandom.

The scariest witch of them all.

With subtle pride flags and floral rainbows, this wall-hanging embroidered piece was a gift for a different Studio Ghibli-loving dear friend. With a simple rendition of the characters Howl and Sophie, from the final scene of the animated movie Howl’s Moving Castle, this embroidered art uses traditional threading techniques to render a favourite scene in honour of this beloved film.

Double your fandom.

This Pusheen-meets-Pokémon canvas zip case was a Christmas gift for a friend and fellow gamer. It was ultimately used for storing their many dice and fits a healthy number of D20s, to enable even the most voracious dice habit. This simple pouch combined two well-known fandoms to tick both pop-culture boxes for my friend.
